The Shortest History of Madrid — home

A red and white sign reading Justicia popular on a wire fence before an overgrown wasteland under a cloudy sky.

Carabanchel

‘Justicia popular’

‘Justicia popular’ - ‘social justice’. This is a sign within the wasteland in Carabanchel that was once the site of one of the Franco dictatorship’s most notorious prisons. People have petitioned for the site to house a memorial to the victims of the dictatorship, but that history is still so politically radioactive that even the Museum of the History of Madrid doesn’t have any permanent exhibitions that take the city’s story beyond the 1920s.
